Welcome back to another edition of Frugal Gift Friday, a series dedicated to helping you save money this holiday season. Today’s frugal gift idea is both oh-so-easy and oh-so-cute at the same time. The ladies on your gift list are going to love receiving a personalized cake carrier.
Have you ever been at a church potluck or family reunion, searching through the lids to the vast collection of cake carrier lids to determine which one belongs to you? Well, I have, and believe me…it is not fun. I decided to do something about it, and now I have no worries since I personalized my cake carrier lid. I always know which one is mine and now there is no confusion when it’s time to pack up and go. My grandmother used to use a piece of masking tape and a pen to mark her plates and dishes, but I think my idea is a lot more stylish than that. Don’t you agree?
I started out with this $5 cake carrier I had purchased from Walmart. If you’re lucky, you may be able to find a pretty colored one at your local store. I’ve seen them in red, aqua, and even pink! For $5 you pretty much get what you’re paying for, and it’s kinda boring. Nothing exciting here, but we can easily change that. Hook up your Cricut or Silhouette, grab some vinyl and let’s get to work.
I used my Cricut Mini with my Extreme Fonts cartridge to design the lettering for my cake carrier. I measured the height of the cake carrier to determine the size of my letters. I decided to make the initial about 2 inches tall, and the other letters 1 inch. Once I cut the letters out with my machine, I applied the large initial to the cake carrier first. Then I applied the full name layer on top of it.
You could easily knock out several of these gifts in less than an hour. Even though it doesn’t cost much to make this gift, it means so much more to the recipient since it’s personalized. You could add a cake mix, frosting knife, cake decorating kit or potholders to the gift if you’d like to dress it up a bit. You could even put a cake inside of it. Now, that’s a gift I’d love to receive!!
