Welcome to another edition of Frugal Gift Friday, friends! Today’s gift is an easy upcycled one. All you need is an old piece of thrift store art, chalk paint and a binder clip to get started. This Upcycled Clipboard Easy Art Display is such a lovely gift and can be personalized with any art printable or photo of your choice.
When I’m thrift store shopping, I look for the potential in the items I’m looking over, especially in the artwork section. I don’t let unappealing wall art pieces discourage me since I know I can use them to make an art piece I love. You can cover up any art piece with Mod Podge and gift-wrap paper, but for today’s project I decided to go another route. I thought it would be fun to turn a piece of wall art into a new artwork display using chalk paint and a binder clip. No one will have to commit to a photo or printable with this art display piece since it can easily be switched out for something new thanks to the handy binder clip. Better yet, you can make this project in only 3 easy steps. Let me show you how!
For this project I used the following supplies:
- Thrift Store Wall Art
- FolkArt Home Decor Chalk Paint in Castle
- Sponge Brush
- Medium Binder Clip
- Hot glue/glue gun
- Printable Art
Step 1: Paint over your wall art with Chalk Paint. It took 2 coats of FolkArt Home Decor Chalk Paint to cover my art piece.
Step 2: Once the paint is dry, secure the binder clip to the top center of the art piece using a hot glue gun and hot glue.
Step 3: Add a piece of artwork or photo to your upcycled clipboard easy art display using the binder clip. If you don’t have any artwork, you can download my Let It Go free printable.

Confession time…I actually made this upcycled clipboard easy art display for myself. I plan on hanging it on my office wall once I decide on the right spot. If you’re making this for a gift, why not print out a collection of printable art so your recipient can change it out each month? Your wall art creation is such a fantastic idea, ESPECIALLY since even a domestic dummy, such as myself, can manage to accomplish this! It’s pretty genius.
I WILL be making this puppy.
