Do you want to keep the bugs away, but don’t like the smell of bug spray? Want the bugs to stay away without harsh chemicals? I’ve got your answer! Find out just how easy it is to make DIY Bug Repellent Lotion Bars with these simple instructions.
I’m not sure what made the difference, but last summer I discovered I had become super sensitive to insect bites. Two incidents and two trips to urgent care left me frustrated. While I don’t like to use bug spray because I hate the smell and don’t like to use chemicals on my body, I hated the insect bites much worse. Thinking about the infection, swelling and pain from the yellow fly bites could still give me nightmares. Yes, it was a miserable week that required lots of ice, creams, rest and even antibiotics for my body to heal.
It was scary to wake up with your leg super swollen and aching with pain. I don’t want to relive the experience again this year. Enough is enough. Instead, I decided to make my own bug repellent lotion bars. It’s a win-win if you ask me, moisturizing your skin while keeping the pesky bugs at bay!
The secret ingredient? Well, it’s not really a secret that Avon Skin So Soft is widely known for its benefits to deter bugs. After the second bug bite incident of 2017 I just about bought stock in the stuff and I haven’t looked back. It works and I love the smell of it (even if it reminds my hubby of his grandmother)! 🙂
I decided to combine my lotion bar recipe with the power of Avon Skin So Soft and I LOVE the way these bug repellent lotion bars turned out. Trust me when I say I’ll be using these bad boys all summer long! You can make them, too. Just follow the simple instructions below.
Materials needed to make Bug Repellent Lotion Bars:
- 1 1/4 cup Beeswax Pellets
- 1 cup Shea Butter
- 1/2 cup Coconut Oil
- 1/2 cup Avon Skin So Soft Bath Oil
- Silicone Mold (similar one here)
How to make Bug Repellent Lotion Bars:
First, combine the beeswax pellets, shea butter and coconut oil in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 1 minute on high. Stir. Repeat until mixture is completely melted (about 4-5 minutes depending on your microwave).
Next, stir in the Avon Skin So Soft Bath Oil and mix well.
Pour the mixture immediately into the silicone mold and let cool. You can place the mold in the freezer for faster cooling if desired. It usually takes about an hour of cooling in the freezer.
Remove bars from mold and store in a container or ziplock bag of your choice.
To use, simply rub the bar over skin and use hands to rub into it is absorbed in the skin. Easy peasy! Let these bug repellent lotion bars do all the work for you this season!
These bars look great. I particularly like the star shape of these bars. I’ll try to make them and use in this season.
