I purchased this cute baby blanket while at Ikea recently. It’s super cute, but I thought it needed something a little extra to bring it up a notch. I decided to add a crocheted shell edge to it, and I think it looks simply adorable. What do you think? Do you want to give it a try? I’m here to help you! All you need is a blanket, yarn and crochet needle.
Adding an edge to a fleece blanket like this one is super easy. The trick is to purchase a blanket that already has stitching around it for you to use. All you have to do is insert your hook through the top of the blanket stitch, pull a loop through, and start crocheting as usual. Since my blanket is a baby blanket, I used soft, baby yarn for my edging. You can choose whatever type of yarn you wish, as long as it isn’t bulky. I used the needle size suggested on the yarn label for my project.
Here is the pattern for the edging I added to this adorable baby blanket!
Crocheted Shell Edging
After joining yarn through the blanket stitch, chain 1.
Round 1: Work 1 SC in every stitch until you reach the corner. For rounded corners, work 2 SC in the three corner stitches. For straight corners, work 3 SC in the corner stitch. Continue working SC around the blanket, joining with a SL ST in the 1st stitch.
Round 2: Chain 1. Work 1 SC in the first stitch, skip the next stitch, 5 DC in next, skip next stitch, *1 SC in the next stitch, skip next stitch, 5 DC in next stitch, repeat from * around, ending with a SL ST in the 1st stitch. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Note: You may have to improvise if your blanket doesn’t have the correct number of stitches. For this blanket, I had to skip an extra stitch to make sure the SL ST was joined properly.
So, what do you think of this crocheted edging? I think it’s a great way to add some pizzazz to a simple blanket. You can find fleece blankets pretty cheap at discount stores, and personalize them with some yarn and a little bit of effort!

Very clever way to dress it up. I hadn’t thought about that blanket stitch being such a good opportunity to crochet onto.
