Granny Square Crochet Easter Eggs

I know it sounds strange to say I’m sharing the free pattern for Granny Square Crochet Easter Eggs, doesn’t it? I mean, eggs aren’t square after all…they’re round. But trust me, this free crochet pattern works and you’ll be pleased with how easy these Easter eggs are to make. Grab your scraps, because this project is an easy way to use up those small bits of leftover yarn!

When I eyed the plastic eggs in the Easter section at Walmart this year, they reminded of the crocheted Christmas ball ornaments I made for my Christmas tree this past year. I just knew a set of Granny Square Easter Eggs would be so colorful and cute! I immediately decided this was a project I was going to try, so I grabbed a bag and couldn’t wait to get home, grab my hook and get started on them.

This really is a simple pattern to follow. You make two identical pieces for each egg, them sew them around a plastic egg.

Materials Needed for this project:

  • Worsted Weighted Yarn in 3 coordinating colors
  • Yarn Needle
  • Crochet Hook Size J
  • Plastic Easter eggs (3 inch sized)

Crochet Easter Eggs Pattern Instructions:

Make two for each Easter egg:

Row 1 Using 1st color: Make a magic ring. Chain 10 inside magic ring, slip stitch to join.

Row 2 in 2nd color: Chain 2. DC, chain 1 in first stitch, *2DC in next stitch. Chain 1. Repeat * all the way around, joining with a slip stitch. (nine chain 1 spaces)

Row 3 in 3rd color: Chain 2. 2DC in first stitch. 3DC in next 4 chain 1 spaces. 3TC in 5th chain 1 space. 3DC in remaining 4 chain 1 spaces. Join with a slip stitch. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Would love to do these but am having a problem with the directions. Row 1 says to ch 10 in the magic circle, row 2 says to dc, chain in the first stitch. Do you mean to single crochet instead of chain? Am I missing something? Thanks
