I confess…I’m guilty as charged. I usually spend my time busily crocheting gifts for my family and friends for Christmas and other special occasions, but overlook my husband who is sitting right next to me. That’s right! Until this project, after a few years of crocheting, I had only crocheted him one gift…a felted soap holder. Pathetic, huh? Yes, I agree. So last month I decided I had to find a project I could make especially for him. Christmas was rapidly approaching, and I didn’t have to time to complete some of the awesome hat patterns I had on hand, so I went with Plan B. Pinterest, anyone? When I discovered these Crocheted Granny Square Slippers on Pinterest, I knew I had to make a pair! My husband’s feet are usually cold this time of year, so it was a perfect gift for him. Even better, I discovered all it takes is 12 granny squares to make these adorable slippers!
I used yarn I had on hand (Lions Brand Wool-Ease Worsted Weight), and followed the free pattern from The Purl Bee. Honestly, this is the best tutorial ever, so I won’t even attempt to recreate it for you. For the pattern and tutorial, visit The Purl Bee Granny Square Slippers Pattern.
As indicated in the picture above, six crocheted granny squares make up one slipper. Two for the sole, two for the sides, one to cover the toes, and one for the heel.
Once you have your granny squares ready, you assemble them together with a single crochet stitch. In the pattern she followed a particular order while assembling, but I just winged it and randomly joined the squares with no problems.
It took me about 5 hours to make these slippers, but it had been awhile since I had made granny squares and I had to refresh myself on the technique. I’m sure it would take me less time to make another pair…which I plan to do. I can’t wait to make a pair in shades of pink for myself! Hmm…sounds like a great Valentine’s Day gift for me!
The best thing about these slippers, is you get to change them up however you wish because you choose the colors and design of your granny squares. You can make the squares in a classic color, all one shade, or choose to mix it up with two or three color choices. You can add pizzazz with a contrasting color to join the squares if you’d like. Feeling funky? You can make these slippers using bright colors, or maybe even a self-striping color changing yarn. My color choices were limited for my project, since I knew my husband would never wear purple slippers. But for my next pair of slippers…watch out! I can’t wait to make a more colorful pair!
Want to give these Granny Square Slippers a try? Then head over to The Purl Bee for the awesome free pattern and tutorial. These are super easy to make and would make a great gift for you or someone else this winter.
