Did you find an extra string of lights when going through your Christmas decorations this year? Today I’ll show you an easy way to put those stringed lights to use! I’m sharing the free pattern for how I made this easy crochet lighted garland to deck the halls with this year.
I’ve been on a crochet kick lately. Maybe it’s because the weather is getting cooler, maybe it’s because I recently committed to teaching some friends how to crochet, or maybe it’s because I’ve realized how much I’ve missed the art of crocheting since I’ve been busy with other projects. Whatever the reason, I’ve recently been inspired to try some new projects. Today I’m here to share this fun project that you can make just in time for your Christmas decorating this year.
When I found an extra string of lights a friend had given me, I had actually just completed another lighted garland project for the holidays. I didn’t let that stop me, so I got busy brainstorming on how I could use this extra set of stringed lights. I recalled a ruffled scarf I had made as a Christmas gift a few years ago, and decided to incorporate the same idea into a crocheted garland. I gave it a try and loved the result, and I’m happy to share the easy pattern with you today.
For this project I used the following:
- string lighted garland
- white worsted weight yarn
- 2 varied shades of red worsted weight yarn
- Crochet hook size K
Free Crochet Pattern:
Row 1: Using the green yarn, attach yarn to the end of the lighted garland with a slip stitch. Chain 2. While holding the strand of yarn across top of the lighted garland string, insert hook under garland string and yarn over, creating 2 loops on hook, yarn over the garland string and pull strands through both loops making a single crochet around the lighted garland string. Continue working single crochet, working around the light bulbs, until you reach the last light bulb and the garland is covered. (Note: for my string of lights I worked 10 single crochets in between each light bulb (2 inch space), but you may need to add or decrease stitches depending on the distance between your light bulbs). Fasten off green yarn.
Row 2: Attach 1st red color yarn to the first SC with a slip stitch. Chain 3 (counts as first DC). Skip the first SC, then DC in each SC across. Fasten off.
Row 3: Attach next red color yarn to the first DC with a slip stitch. Chain 3 (counts as first DC). DC in first DC, then 2DC in each DC across. Fasten off.
Row 4: Attach white yarn to the first DC with a slip stitch. Chain 2 (counts as first SC). Skip the first DC, then SC in each DC across. Fasten off and weave in ends.
I love the slight ruffle to this easy crochet lighted garland. The white trim on red reminds me of Santa. What can I say? Now it’s your turn to grab some yarn and get to work. Have fun crocheting!

I am a nervous nelly – these won’t catch fire?
No, they shouldn’t catch on fire since the wires are covered and the lights don’t put out enough heat. I used mine at Christmas this year with no trouble.
Like what did you do with it? Did you put it on your tree or elsewhere?
Yes, I put mine on a small tree I had in my bonus room. It was beautiful!
I made this with white lights and verigated christmas colored yarn.
I am going to bring it to my mother in law for the mantle.
Awesome! I know she will enjoy it this Christmas. 🙂
