Hi, friends! Thanks for stopping by for another fun Frugal Gift Friday. Today’s thrifty gift project cost me less than $1. Yes, you read that right. I purchased a set of wooden kitchen utensils at Walmart for a whopping 88 cents and transformed them with some Mod Podge and fabric scraps I had on hand in my craft supply closet. These decorated wooden kitchen utensils are going to be the perfect gift for someone this year!
Forget boring kitchen utensils…today we are dressing them up with a fun project for the chef on your Christmas shopping list. Wooden kitchen utensils are classic, but decorating them with Mod Podge and fabric will make them modern. It’s easy to personalize these gifts by using seasonal fabrics, fabric to match someone’s kitchen, or fabric in someone’s favorite color.
Here is what you will need for this project:
- set of wooden kitchen utensils
- fabric scraps
- Fabric Mod Podge
- Hard Coat Mod Podge
- sponge brush
Step 1: Cut your fabric into 7 x 1.25 inch rectangles.
Step 2: Apply Fabric Mod Podge to the kitchen utensil handle using a sponge brush, applying only to the area the fabric will cover. Wrap the fabric around the handle and press to make sure there are no air bubbles. Let it dry for 15 minutes.
Step 3: Apply a coat of Mod Podge to the fabric and let it dry for 15 minutes.
Step 4: Apply a another coat of Fabric Mod Podge to the fabric and let it dry for 15 minutes.
Step 5: This is the last step…and will help waterproof your project! Apply a final coat of Hard Coat Mod Podge and let it dry for at least 72 hours prior to use.
Wow…what a fun transformation….these decorated wooden kitchen utensils sure aren’t boring now!
Give this as a stand alone gift, or pair it with a pot holder, cookie mix or recipe binder. You can get free printables for a recipe binder here at Sparkles of Sunshine! Also, be sure to include a note with your gift letting the recipient know they should only hand wash these and not immerse them in water for long periods of time.
Who am I kidding? These decorated wooden kitchen utensils are so adorable I am gifting them to myself. I can’t resist these lovelies! Have you checked out the previous Frugal Gift Friday posts? They are packed with more thrifty gift ideas that will save you money.
