Looking for a quick and easy homemade gift idea? Today I’ve got you covered, because I’m sharing how easy it is to make Homemade Relaxation Eye Pillows With Lavender. Not only is it simple to make these luxurious eye pillows, but they also make very affordable gifts. With only a few materials you can quickly whip up enough of these to give out as birthday party favors, bridesmaid gifts, or holiday gifts. Do you know someone that needs to relax? I’m sure we all do. That is why these Homemade Relaxation Eye Pillows make such great gifts…because everyone can use a little pampering in their life! Check out some of the benefits of using eye pillows for relaxation:
- The lavender scent used in aromatherapy helps relieve stress, insomnia and depression.
- The weight of the eye pillow provides gentle, relaxing pressure.
- The eye pillow conforms to your face to block out light, creating a relaxing atmosphere.
- Use cold to reduce eye puffiness, or use hot to provide extra relaxation.
I bet I’ve convinced you to make one for yourself now, haven’t I?
For this project you will need the following:
- Rice (2 cups per pillow. Use regular rice, not quick cooking rice. It’s heavier and works better for microwave use.)
- Fabric of your choice in coordinating colors/patterns (fabric scraps and fat quarters are great for this project)
- Coordinating thread
- Scissors
- Lavender Essential Oil
Got your materials? Then, let’s get started!
Start by cutting your fabric into rectangles 4 1/2 inches by 10 inches. You will need two rectangles for each eye pillow made. You can make your eye pillows with one fabric if you’d like, but they look so much cuter when you use two different colors/patterns.
Line up your two rectangles with right sides facing. Stitch the fabrics together on three sides, leaving one of the short ends open.
Measure out 2 cups of rice for your pillow. Add 10-15 drops of Lavender essential oil and mix well.
Turn your fabric right side out and carefully pour the rice into the pillow (I used a funnel for this). Fold the edges of the fabric inside and stitch the end shut.
Sew a straight line across the opposite short end to make the ends of the eye pillow uniform.
In the picture below you can see how the seams on the ends of the pillow now appear to match.
Wasn’t that an easy project? I told you it was simple, but don’t worry, your gift recipient won’t know it! I made 3 eye pillows with the 3 fat quarters I purchased, but I easily could have made several more with my left over fabric. Since I only paid $3 for the fabric and then used thread, rice and essential oil I already had on hand, these gifts definitely qualify for a frugal gift idea. I could have saved even more by using scrap fabric I already had on hand, but this polka dotted fabric caught my eye when I was at the fabric store!
I hope you’ve enjoyed this easy tutorial to make your own Homemade Relaxation Eye Pillows With Lavender. Will you decide to make one today?

Have you ever had trouble with mold from putting them in the freezer?
Christie Selken says
Hi, Elaine, I haven’t had trouble with that, but I don’t but mine in the freezer often. I usually use mine warm and haven’t had any issues with it.

What do you mean by fat quarters?
Christie Selken says
You can find Fat Quarters at the fabric store. They are usually used for quilting, but are small pieces of fabric. I like to use them for small projects like this one.

Your skin care recipes seem like lots of fun. What would you suggest for dry skin?
