Do you realize that October is Adopt a Dog Month? Today I thought I’d share my dog adoption story with you, along with a super quick project to make for your pet.
After my husband and I purchased our home 6 years ago, we decided it was time to make everything official and adopt a pet. No litter boxes for us, so we settled on getting a dog and started our search. We wanted to find a dog that really needed a home, so we started our search with the local animal shelters and rescue groups. I eventually found a homeless Pomeranian online at Petfinder.com through the rescue group Pitt Friends, and we arranged to meet him and see if he’d be good fit for our home. It was love at first sight! We brought him home and the rest is history. Of course, a few years later we decided he needed a sister after finding a Shih-Tzu that needed a home.
I am still amazed that anyone would want to give up such adorable animals, but I am so grateful they did so I can have them in my life. These two doggies get spoiled daily, and we enjoy every moment of it. Do you want to see the latest project I made for my fur babies?
These adorable dog collars are simple to make. All you need is a child’s shirt with a collar, a pair of scissors and a dog for this project. I measured the length of my dog’s collar and searched my local Goodwill for a child’s shirt with the same measurement to ensure a proper fit. Be sure your shirt has a top button at the collar since not all collars are created equal and some do not have a top button!
There is only one step to this project. Simply cut the collar from the shirt along the neckline, keeping the first button and button-hole in tact for closure.
That’s it! Just button the collar together and slip it on your dog’s neck. Here’s a pic of Cosmo and Lanie getting prepared for their photo shoot! As usual, they get paid in doggie treats for their services.
I think my babies look pretty snazzy in their dressed up collars. What do you think?
Pets can be a lot of work, and it’s important to be responsible when it comes to the health and safety of your pet. I was hesitant to get a pet because I knew it was a big responsibility and would change our routine. But we have never regretted giving our two babies a home, and they have brought so much love and joy into our home. In fact, we realized our lives were pretty boring before we brought these two home with us! Nothing compares to the feeling I get when my little ones snuggle up close to me and give me a good lick to show they love me. Pets are so special!
Won’t you consider adopting a dog this month? Not only will you benefit from the companionship they give, but research has shown that there are health benefits to pet ownership as well. People with pets live longer, fuller lives. Why not make a trip to your animal shelter today or check out Petfinder and give a dog a new home today.
Save an animal today! I guarantee they will save you right back with their unconditional love.

Anything with animals gets me far too excited, but you’ve added more excitement since it’s an upcycle project! Love this so much! I’m picturing doing this for one of my cats with a retired baby/toddler shirt…

This is a brilliant idea. I don’t craft or sew, but know how to use scissors. And thrift store shopping is the best way to buy clothes, especially for little dogs. I had a few tiny foster dogs last winter and didn’t want to spend $20 on a dog coat to keep them warm. Instead I went to Goodwill and picked up a few $1 baby sweatshirts. I just rolled up the sleeves a bit and they worked great.

Karen, I think it’s awesome you provided a foster home for dogs! Even better that you made them sweatshirts from baby clothes! That sounds like an awesome idea, and I will have to give it a try once weather gets cooler here. Thanks for stopping by!
