When my mother decided she was in the market for something to prop her feet up on in her living room, I immediately sprung into action and started the search. She had looked at various types of furniture like floor poufs and ottomans at all the stores in town, but nothing really fit the bill for what she was looking for. One day when we were talking she mentioned she would love one of the coffee tables that open up for storage, but she really wanted a soft top so it would be comfortable when resting her feet on it. I did what any good daughter would do. I turned to Craigslist!
It’s amazing the great finds I’ve discovered on Craigslist. Imagine how giddy I was when I saw this coffee table for sale for a mere $10. With a price that low, I was sure it would be in horrible condition. I was so happy when we arrived to take a look and discovered that wasn’t the case at all. Despite a few scratches and the fact that the hinges needed to be reattached, it was perfect! The cedar lined storage inside was exactly what my mother needed, and I couldn’t wait to get it home and get started on this project.
Once my husband installed new hinges, I grabbed my paintbrush and got to work. Using my trusty FolkArt Home Decor Chalk Paint, I painted the coffee table a beautiful off-white color. After 3 coats of paint, it was ready for waxing and then it was time to upholster the top.
I purchased some fabric a lightly striped green color that would match the throw pillows on my mother’s sofa. I layered the foam, batting and fabric and stapled it directly to the wooden top. Afterwards, I stapled a rectangular shaped piece of batting to the underside to cover the edges of the stapled fabric and keep a clean look. All that was left to do was to reattach the top and then voila…my mom now had a new storage ottoman to prop her feet up on! Check out this Craigslist coffee table makeover!
I am so happy with the way this project turned out. It’s hard to believe that including the cost of the coffee table, it only cost me $38 dollars to make this upholstered storage ottoman. Now, that’s a steal!
I really love the storage this piece brings to the living room. This piece of furniture offers great storage, a stylish look, and a soft place to elevate your feet. What more do you need? In fact, this storage ottoman looked so good in my living room I almost hated to part with it!
I couldn’t wait to get this storage ottoman to my mother, and I am so happy that she likes it as much as I do. What do you think of this Craigslist coffee table makeover? Do you think you would like to have a storage ottoman like this in your home?
Want to take another look at this amazing coffee table transformation? OK, let’s check out the before and after pictures again!
I bet you’re thinking about checking out Craigslist right now, aren’t you? Well, if you do, remember to think about the potential in the items you see. Some people may have overlooked this $10 coffee table, but with some paint, fabric and a little elbow grease, I was able to transform this piece into a new piece of furniture. Why not do you own coffee table makeover today?

This is gorgeous Christie. I am so in love. I have a coffee table in my living room that is nice but it isn’t functional. It takes up a lot of play space for the kids. However, your coffee table would be perfect for toy storage. (If you could only see my living room floor right now.) So I am willing to trade you… lol Great job and yes, I am going to go scour Craigslist. Pinning and sharing!

That is a craigslist steal! I can’t believe it was only $10. I really want to try my hand at upholstering, bloggers make it look so simple and I can’t believe how inexpensive it is to DIY! You said you put wax on after the chalkboard paint, is that because of the finish on chalkboard paint? I’ve never worked with it but it always looks so pretty.

I’m so glad you like it, too! I usually don’t use wax on my chalk paint projects. I used white wax on this project to give it a white washed look, but I could have left that step out. It really is easy to use chalk paint to makeover a piece of furniture. What’s so great about chalk paint is there’s no sanding or priming. Just make sure it’s clean and then start painting! I bet you could do it if you tried!
