Just like with any craft, there are always new tools and gadgets busting on the scene in the world of crochet. While some of them prove themselves useful, I tend to stick with the basics when it comes to crocheting. Whether you have beginning or advanced crochet skills, this list of top 10 must-have crochet supplies will keep you organized and ready to tackle those crochet projects you’ve been eyeing on Pinterest. When I first started crocheting, I really wasn’t sure what I needed for supplies. I didn’t know what was essential and what was just an accessory. I had no clue! Maybe that’s you, or maybe you just want to make sure you aren’t missing out on something that help you when crocheting. Today you’ll find out because I’m here to share my list of top 10 must-have crochet supplies. Other than yarn and patterns, of course!
Crochet Hooks
Every crocheter needs a good set of crochet hooks. There are many types of hooks out there made out of materials from steel to plastic. These hooks from Tulip are my fave. They are very ergonomic and prevent wrist pain during those long hours of crocheting. You can buy them individually, but this set comes in a super neat case for storage!
Flexible Tape Measure
A flexible tape measure comes in handy when checking the gauge of a project. Make sure your stitches are the proper size with a handy tape measure like this one, perfect for measuring curved and flat surfaces.
Scissors
You’ll need a good pair of sharp scissors for cutting yarn. My favorite brand of scissors is Friskars, and I absolutely love the pink pair my hubby bought me. They just make me happy.
Yarn Needles
Yarn needles are great not only for sewing granny squares and other project pieces together, but they are also perfect for weaving the ends of yarn to prevent the unraveling of your project.
Stitch Counter
Keep track of your stitches or rows of stitches with a handy stitch counter. This saved my life, friends. There’s nothing worse than losing your place when following complicated crochet patterns!
Stitch Markers
Stitch markers help you keep your place when starting new rounds. Keep track of increases and decreases easily by adding stitch markers to your project. These come in handy for me when following patterns for socks and hats.
Crochet Reference Book
Every crocheter needs a good reference book. I know you can find many answers and tutorials online, but I like having a book I can reference any time, whether I have Internet access or not. Since I do a lot of crocheting when I’m on the road, I keep mine in my crochet tote so I’ll always have it with me.
Crochet/Yarn Tote
I like to carry projects around with me, so my crochet tote has been a lifesaver to me. I’ve worked on crochet projects on vacations, family visits and doctor appointments thanks to having a tote to carry my supplies around with me. Never waste another moment of waiting again when you can work on a crochet project…it makes the time go by so much faster.
Crochet Project Labels
Don’t spend hours of your time and hard work without showing it off!. I attach one of these to all my projects to add a special touch to my handmade gifts.
Yarn Storage
The type of yarn you’ll need for each project varies, so you’ll need a good stash of it. Every crocheter or knitter eventually becomes a yarn hoarder lover, so you’ll need an organized system in place for all those skeins of yarn you’ll collect over the years. I use this simple rolling tote to keep my yarn organized. I love that I can roll it around the house with me as I work on my projects.
There you have it! Those are the 10 must-have crochet supplies that I believe every crocheter needs. If you’re just starting to learn I’d start with a basic kit, but once you get the hang of it these items will make crocheting much easier.
this is a wonderful post! I have thought about getting back to my roots and learning how to crochet again because my great gram always did it but I dont remember any of it now. I would not even know where to start, so I am glad you shared this because now I dont feel as lost when I am ready to learn this skill again!!
You need to get back with it…I love it! I bet you’ll pick it back up with ease since you’ve learned it before. I wish I had thought about getting my grandmother and great-grandmother to teach me how to crochet when they were alive, but I never did because I didn’t realize how much fun it was. I’m sorry I missed out, but my mom did teach me to crochet a chain. I learned the rest on my own. Thanks so much for your kind words about this post! XOXO
