Make a Wine Cork Trivet in 2 Easy Steps

A friend recently gave me a huge bag of wine corks she was saving for projects.  I was so excited because cork projects are easy to do, are affordable, and the possibilities are endless!  I’ve already made a few projects with these corks, but today I’m going to show you how I used some of those corks to make an easy gift for the holidays.

This week’s Frugal Gift Friday project is something any cook can use.  Everyone can use a good trivet in their kitchen to protect surfaces from heat, and this simple DIY Wine Cork Trivet can be made in just a few minutes.   Here is what you’ll need for this easy project:

50-55 corks, uniform in size
One 8-10 inch metal hose clamp
Screwdriver

There are only 2 steps to making this easy project.  Isn’t that awesome?  I knew you’d like that!

  1. First, lay the metal hose clamp down on the table, and arrange the corks inside the clamp by standing them upright.  I arranged my corks right side up so they would lay flat, and added enough corks to make a tight fit.
  2. Raise the hose clamp up until it reaches the middle of the corks.  Use the screwdriver to tighten the clamp and bind the corks together.  You know it’s tight enough when you can pick up the trivet without any corks falling out.

That’s it!  You now have a perfectly functional trivet for a very reasonable price.  Since the corks were given to me, my trivet only cost about $2 to make.  Isn’t that great for a small budget?

You could pick up a few wooden spoons or pot holders from the dollar store to accompany this gift if you’d like.  You could also personalize it a bit by spray painting the metal hose clamp first, or painting the outsides of the corks.  Use your imagination to make your gift special.

Wow such a cool idea! and easy too! I love this idea and who would have thought to use these two items together? Brilliant! I think those hose clamps come in different sizes too? If so you could make some specialized sizes for those larger pans! Thanks for sharing 🙂
