I had this nightstand from a bedroom furniture set and it just didn’t work for me. I mean, it is way too short for my tall bed, not to mention it was extremely outdated! I had snatched the drawers for a project (check it out here), so I was left with a little side table without drawers. Hmmm…what’s a girl to do? How about make it into a cute chalk painted side table with burlap shelves? Great idea!!
I don’t have a before picture, but the night stand originally belonged with this chest, so just use your imagination for a bit, ok?
I used my trusty chalk paint recipe (find it in this post) with some leftover paint to bring some color into this side table’s life. It was looking better already! I then used sandpaper to scruff it up a bit, then used some wood stain to accentuate the distressing detail. I added a poly top coat for protection and she was ready…for shelves!
I wanted this side table to have a beachy, shabby feel, so I decided to add burlap shelves. My husband cut out two pieces of plywood to fit, and I used my stable gun to cover the pieces with burlap. I slid the new burlap shelves into place and smiled. What a great transformation!
I really love the distressing detail on this piece! It makes such a cute, shabby side table now, doesn’t it? I think one of these would be so cute in a beach house, painted a cool, turquoise blue. What do you think? If I win the lottery and acquire a new beach house, I may have to paint this baby again! Actually, I could pay you to paint it!
What are your thoughts on this piece? Do you like the burlap shelves?
I’ve used burlap shelves before in another furniture piece.
Keep your eyes on the blog, because you might see it soon!
Don’t you just love seeing old pieces of furniture revived? I love that I was able to take an old, worn out item with no purpose, and change it into a useful side table for a living room. This cute little side table looks so much happier now, and I love that she brings a little bit of sunshine into the room now.
