The Upcycled Sweater Pillow

Do you have an old sweater lying around that you were considering taking to Goodwill?  You might want to think again after you see today’s project!

Don't throw out that old sweater! Learn how to make an upcycled sweater pillow at Sparkles of Sunshine.

I had a lonely pillow form at my house that needed a bit of dressing up. After going through some clothing to donate to my local Goodwill store, I came across a beautiful red sweater. It reminded me so much of Christmas that I decided to use it to make a festive holiday pillow for my living room.

Upcycled DIY Sweater Pillow

Would you like to know how I made this super cute holiday pillow?  Then you’ve come to the right place!  I started by making sure my sweater would have enough material to cover my pillow.  I simply placed the pillow inside the sweater to make sure it would fit.

I then cut the neck and arms off of the sweater.

I cut the material so it formed two equal rectangles large enough to fit my pillow.  For a proper fit, measure your pillow and add 1 inch extra to allow for seams.  For example, if your pillow were 12X20 in., you would cut your material pieces 13X21 in.

Next, turn the material with right sides facing, and sew around 3 edges.  I left the left edge of my pillow open since it was the bottom of the sweater and had a different design than the other edges.

Use Sweater to Make a Pillow

I matched up my sweater with some red yarn I had on hand, and used a needle to sew up the last end with yarn to close up the pillow.  You could add a zipper on this end if you wanted a removable cover, but since my sewing skills aren’t that advanced yet I chose to make my pillow cover a permanent one.

Now all that’s left to do is enjoy your pillow throughout the holiday season!
