The Best Pens for Planners

Want to know which pens to use for your weekly and monthly planning? Discover the best pens for planners that won't bleed, smear or dry out.

I’ve written a lot about planning on this blog in the past and I’ve even shared some free planning printables with you. But recently when a friend shared her favorite planner pens with me and explained how her hubby had researched online to find them, I realized I’ve never shared my favorite pens for planning with you. So today I’m spilling the beans with my collection of the best pens for planners because when you’re a serious planner like me, you deserve the best, right? These pens are some of the smoothest, prettiest pens you can find that have been tried and tested by yours truly. I can’t wait to share my faves with you today and give you a peek at at them! This post contains some affiliate links. Click here to read my full disclosure policy.

First in the line up are Uniball Vision Elite pens, which have long been my favorite pen to write with. I’ve used these pens for years and they never disappoint. They glide effortlessly across paper and are perfect to use when I’m in a hurry to write something down. They are airplane safe and come in micro, medium and bold points. I have them in just about any color and I’ve had no problems with them bleeding through the thick paper of my planner.

When a friend let me give her Staedtler Triplus Fineliner pens a try, I instantly knew I needed to buy some for myself. I love the triangular shaped barrel that makes writing with them a breeze. What makes these pens so special not only is that they won’t bleed through paper, but also that you can leave the cap off of them for up to two days and they won’t dry up. Pretty amazing, huh? They come in a very wide range of colors from brilliant to neon, so if you like to plan by color, these will become your go-to pens. Did I mention they come in their own plastic carrying case? What’s not to love about these???

Next in line are Sharpie Finepoint Pens, another favorite of mine. They are both water and smear resistant and won’t bleed through paper. The fine point allows you to write in very small spaces in your planner so you eek out every bit of space. They come in a wide range of colors so if you’re a color-coding planner, these are another great option for you, too.

Up next is the Paper Mate Flair Felt Tip Pens, another great option. Especially in these fun, tropical colors! These pens are quick drying so say goodbye to smears. The soft tip won’t damage fine paper and like all the other pens in this post, they won’t bleed. There are 26 beautiful colors for you to choose from.

Last, but definitely not least in this round up of the best pens for planners, is the Pilot Frixion. What makes it a winner is….are you ready for this?? It’s erasable!! Yes! The perfectionist in me LOVES this feature. Now I can erase any mistakes and forget the white out or pen scribbles. It’s a planner’s dream come true. The gel ink writes smoothly and I like that it comes in a retractable pen for those moments when I need to jot down something fast.
