The holidays are over. You find yourself sitting in your living room buried in a sea of ripped wrapping paper. Reality sets in. You know it’s time to clean you home, but you feel overwhelmed. You had a busy month and you let some things go. Where do you even start??? You can start with today’s Post Holiday Cleaning Guide!
Let’s whip your home back into shape! This Post Holiday Cleaning Guide will help you get your home back to normal (or maybe even a little better than normal) in record time. You can complete all these tasks in just one day. Doesn’t that sound great?
But first things first…this guide is meant to be used AFTER you’ve put all those decorations away. So once you’ve un-decked the halls of all holly and such, check out and print the guide below. You’ll be on your way to enjoying a clean, comfortable home as we start the new year.
BEDROOMS
- Wash all bed linens, including dust ruffles, sheets, pillowcases, mattress covers, quilts, throws, etc.
- Clean window treatments. Wash what you can at home, take to the dry cleaner, or use the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner to remove any dust. Wipe clean any blinds.
- Dust all surfaces. Make sure to work from the top of room down, staring with the ceiling fan and light fixtures.
- Clean windows and mirrors.
- Wash any area rugs that can be washed, or take them outside and beat them to remove dust.
- Vacuum and sweep/mop floors.
KITCHEN & DINING ROOMS
- Clean out the refrigerator and freezer. Remove contents and wipe down shelves, being sure to toss any expired or unwanted food before placing food back.
- Clean all kitchen appliances. You can use your oven’s self-cleaning cycle, or use a degreaser to clean the inside of the oven. Wipe any toasters, coffee pots or other small appliances, along with the inside of your microwave.
- Wash windows and mirrors.
- Clean window treatments. Check the window treatment instructions first, then wash what you can at home or take to the dry cleaner. For heavy drapes you can clean by using the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner to remove any dust. Also clean any blinds with a damp cloth.
- Dust all surfaces including cabinets, working from the top of the room down.
- Sweep and mop floors.
BATHROOMS
- Wash any display towels and hand towels.
- Wash all area rugs.
- Dust all surfaces.
- Clean window treatments. Wash what you can at home, take to the dry cleaner, or use the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner to remove any dust. Wipe blinds clean.
- Clean all mirrors and windows.
- Clean all sinks, toilets, tubs and showers.
- Sweep and mop the bathroom floors.
LIVING ROOM
- Clean window treatments. Wash what you can at home, take to the dry cleaner, or use the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner to remove any dust. Clean any blinds with a damp cloth.
- Dust all surfaces, working from the top of room down, starting with your ceiling fan.
- Clean all windows and mirrors.
- Wash any area rugs that are washable, or take them outside and beat them to remove dust. You may want to use a carpet cleaner machine to shampoo any stained or heavily used rugs.
- Clean any upholstered furniture. Take cushions outside and beat gently to remove dust. You can also use your vacuum’s upholstery brush to vacuum over and underneath the cushions. If you see any stains, check the care labels of the cushion covers and follow the instructions.
- Vacuum carpets or sweep/mop floors.
