I know that Valentine’s Day is over a month away, but what can I say? The hubby and I attended a marriage conference at our church this past weekend, so love is in the air at the Selken household this week. Well, it is every week, but this week it inspired me to get started on some projects for Valentine’s Day. So, grab your washi tape and stickers, friends, and let me show you how easy it is to create some fun valentines for your friends and loved ones this year!
So, what do you do when your husband has leftover matches from one of his projects? Make matchbox valentines, of course! Well…truthfully, my first thought was, “What the heck am I gonna do with all of these leftover matchboxes???” The junk drawer was full, and we use a lighter for the grill, so I was contemplating just trashing them when I remembered seeing matchbox valentines on Pinterest. Bingo! The ones I’d seen were made with decorative duct tape, but I decided to go with washi tape instead. This was an easy, quick project, and I think they turned out beautiful. In fact, I’ll be a little sad to see these pretties go…
Supplies:
- Glittered washi tape
- stickers
- empty matchboxes
- small candies
When picking out your washi tape, make sure you choose glittered tape. Unlike other washi tape, it’s not transparent, and you don’t want the writing on the matchboxes to show through!
Cut your washi tape into strips long enough to fit around the matchbox. I cut mine into 4 inch strips which fit perfectly around mine. I’m guessing matchboxes are standard in size, so that should work for you, too.
All you do is cover the matchbox with the washi tape in whatever pattern/design you wish. I covered some of mine in stripes, some all one color, you get to choose!
The matchbox valentines are looking pretty good already, but something is missing. Hmm….
Stickers! I added the adorable Mason jar stickers I found at Walmart onto the matchboxes and can I just say they look fabulous? Seriously, the only thing that could improve them is M&M’s, which I added when I was done. Perfect!
I’m so glad I didn’t go with my first inclination to throw these matchboxes away, because I am in love with them. I love the glittery sparkles of the tape, I love the cute Mason jar stickers, and I must admit I loved sampling the delicious M&M’s that were leftover from this project.
This is a relatively cheap project for Valentine’s Day, too. We purchased 10 matchboxes for just $1 at our local Dollar Tree Store, and it doesn’t take many M&M’s to fill them up. You could even make these candy-less by putting a small valentines note or love coupon inside instead of candy and keep the M&M’s for yourself. Sounds like a great plan to me!
