DIY Painted Yardstick Tray

Today’s project is one of the easiest, most affordable, but loveliest trays to make.  After spending some time on Pinterest searching for tray ideas, I ran across the cutest tray made out of nothing but yardsticks.  Bingo- that’s easy enough for me!  I decided to take it a step further and paint my yardsticks to make this project my own.  This would make an excellent gift and can be made in a short amount of time.

DIY Yardstick4

The grand total for this project for me was only $5!  Of course, I already had the paint and glue sticks on hand, so if you don’t have these items it can cost more to make.  The items needed to make this project are 5 yardsticks, a glue gun, glue sticks, a saw, sanding sponge and your desired paint color(s).

Supplies7

Now, let’s get started. Take 4 of the yardsticks and saw each into two 18” sections.   The remaining yardstick needs to be sawed into three 12” sections.  Use a sanding sponge to smooth any rough edges.

Cut rulers3

Now that the pieces are cut It’s time to paint.  I decided to paint my tray two different colors, bronze and gold, and I’m glad I did.  I really like the contrast of these two colors together.  Remember this is your tray, so you can paint it neon green if that’s what you like.  No rules here!

Painted pieces6

Line up your 18” painted pieces, then use the glue gun to glue the 3 shorter pieces across the bottom.

Glued pieces5

You’re done!  Wasn’t that easy?  Now it’s time to sit back and enjoy your handiwork.

Completed Project 21

What do you think of this easy project?  I think this tray is super cute!  Do you want to give it a try? Perhaps make it a little more your own by trying something different?  Feel free to leave me a comment; I’d love to hear your ideas!
