I’ll be the first to confess that I’ve not always been an avid Bible reading Christian. I wish I had taken more time out of my busy schedule in the past and made it a priority in my life. I truly believe that if I had done that, my life could have been easier. I’m sure I would have reacted differently to some of the circumstances in my life, and I probably would have handled a lot of situations differently had I spent more time reading the word of God. Do you read the Bible or has it been a while since you picked it up? Today I want to share with you why I read the Bible and why you should, too!
There’s just something about reading the Bible that restores my soul and gives me strength for the day ahead. Reading even just one verse on a hectic morning can change my attitude from being fearful and depressed to feeling encouraged and ready to tackle my problems. I’ve noticed I’m happier, less likely to lose my patience, and even more productive on the days that I spend reading God’s word. Needless to say, I am sure my husband knows notices the difference on the days I don’t spend time seeking God through His word and prayer. Based on my experience, I am convinced that reading the Bible every day can change your life. Could you use some changes in your life today? I thought you might say yes!
Why is it so important to read the Bible?
A couple of months ago, I decided it was time to purchase a new vacuum for my home. I ordered it online and was giddy with excitement once it finally arrived on my doorstep. I brought it into the house, ripped open the box and started piecing it together. All I could think about was the infomercial I had seen and I could not wait to try it out for myself. When I was done putting it together, I plugged it in and took it for spin around my living room floor. It glided across my floor so smoothly and had such a quiet purr that even my dog was happy with this new vacuum.
But then I noticed something…the canister was still empty.
What was going on? Shouldn’t there be some debris in the canister after vacuuming my entire living room??? What’s a girl to do? I thought for a moment and did what I should have done in the first place. I grabbed the instruction manual. A few moments and an adjustment later, I was well on way to having a clean living room floor after following the instructions in the manual.
As Christians, the Bible is our instruction manual. That is why it is so important for us to read it daily! The number one way God communicates with us today is through His written word. Through His scripture he speaks to us, provides instruction, and answers our questions. The Bible says, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (ESV)
Here are some ways the Bible serves as our instruction manual:
The Bible Convicts Us Of Our Sin
For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.” Hebrews 4:12 (NLT)
The Bible Protects Us From Temptation
Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm.” Ephesians 6:13 (NLT)
The Bible Provides Direction For Our Lives
Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.” Psalm 119:105 (NLT)
The Bible Provides Encouragement
Everything written long ago was written to teach us so that we would have confidence through the endurance and encouragement which the Scriptures give us.” Romans 15:4 (GW)
The Bible Increases Our Faith
So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ.” Romans 10:17 (NRSV)
The Bible Brings Success
Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.” Joshua 1:8 (NLT)
If you’re like me, I bet you could use a little wisdom, encouragement, direction, and some extra faith in your life today. Am I right? Well, have you opened the Bible lately? The answers you need are right there waiting for you. God desires to speak to you through His word, provide you with instruction and draw you closer to Him. Will you join me and read the Bible today? Will you allow God to speak to you through His written word?
