Looking for an easy holiday craft that you can tackle in an afternoon? Not sure what to do with the styrofoam cones you have stashed in your craft closet? I have an easy fix with today’s easy holiday craft idea, layered felt Christmas trees.
I was searching through my craft supplies for an easy project idea when I decided to make these layered felt Christmas trees. I’d seen many different versions of cone crafts for the holidays, but I’d never tried one myself until this project came to life. I saw a couple of styrofoam cones taking up room in my craft closet beside some left over felt from an old a St. Patrick’s Day project when inspiration hit. The only other supplies I used for this project was a pair of scissors, a pen and a hot glue gun/glue. Let me share with you how I made these fun holiday decorations.
I came up with the idea to “stack” layers of felt onto the cone. I started out by tracing the bottom of the styrofoam cone onto a piece of felt, then I cut the circle out about 1/4 inch smaller than the circle I had traced. I then used the scissors to cut out a scalloped edging to mimic the look of tree limbs. I then slid the ring onto the cone, pulling it down until it fit snugly into place around the cone base. I created layer upon layer of these rings in varied colors, cutting each circle slightly smaller than the other. I kept stacking layer after layer until I reached the top.
For the final piece I used a piece of felt without a hole in the middle, then used the hot glue gun to wrap and secure it into place on to the top of the tree.
My ringed layers varied with scallops 1 -2 inches in length, and I changed the shape of the scallops so some are pointy and some are more rounded. Remember the layers don’t have to be uniform and perfect in appearance. The beauty of this project is that every tree is different, even every branch is different. The only requirement is to have fun while you’re making these. This is a great project the kids can help with, too!
You can add embellishments to your trees if you’d like, such as red pom poms for berries or a yellow star at the top. Use your imagination to make your very own unique layered felt Christmas trees to put on display in your home this holiday season.

What a fun project and it’s great that it doesn’t have to perfect. Thanks for sharing this on Merry Monday.
