I gave up on purchasing new pillows for my home years ago. I was tired of spending money on expensive store bought pillows. Either they didn’t last long enough for me to feel like the cost was justified, or I grew tired of them too quickly. I decided to make a change and start sewing my own pillow covers. That way I could invest in nice feather pillow forms and use them over and over again with different fabric covers. In fact, making easy sew envelope pillow covers is such an easy task I tend to do it every season. Now you can, too, with this simple tutorial. Let me show you how it’s done.
Easy Sew Envelope Pillow Covers Instructions:
You will need 3 pieces of fabric for these pillow covers. Start by measuring your pillow to determine what sizes of fabric you’ll need.
First panel: Add 1 in to the width and height of your pillow measurement. For example, if your pillow is 20×20, you will cut a piece of fabric 21×21.
Second panels (make 2): The next two pieces of fabric overlap to create the envelope in the back, and they will be the same size. Take the width of your first panel of fabric, divide it in in half, then add 3 inches. This will be the width of your fabric. The height will be the same as your first panel of fabric. So for my pillow, 21 divided in half is 10.5, then add 3 in, so my width was 13.5 in. I cut out two pieces of fabric 21×13.5 for my back panels.
Now let’s get busy sewing. Start by hemming one side of one back panel for the length of the pillow. You want a nice, smooth hem since it will be seen on the back of the pillow.
Now it’s time to pin the back panels of fabric to the front panel of fabric. Line up the fabric so that the hemmed back panel is square with the right side of the front panel, with the hemmed side in the middle of the pillow.
Now lay the other back panel on top so that it is square with the left side of the front panel.
This will make the two back panels overlap to create the envelope. Secure fabric into place with pins.
Next, sew the fabric together by sewing around the edges of the entire pillow.
Turn the pillow cover so that it is facing right sides out and you’re done.
Stuff your easy sew pillow covers with pillow forms and your task will be complete. I love how the new fabric brightened up my space and gave it new life.
