I can’t believe today is the last edition of Frugal Gift Friday. Yes, we now have less than a week before Christmas! Have you finished your Christmas shopping and projects yet? Don’t worry, although time may be running out, today’s project is super quick and can be completed in less than 10 minutes.
Today I’m going to show you how to make a Microwavable Rice Heating Pad for those left on your gift list. These heating pads make excellent gifts because let’s just face it- we all get aches and pains. These heating pads only take a minute to heat up and can be used over and over again. You can even put these in the freezer and use for a cold pack! They will conform to the body to administer heat/cold where it’s needed most. Best of all, there’s no annoying electrical cord to worry about. OK, let’s stop wasting time and get started!
Here is what you will need for this project:
- Washcloth
- Coordinating thread
- Sewing machine
- Rice (Any type of rice will do as long as it isn’t instant rice.)
First, fold the washcloth over to form a rectangle. Line up the edges and use the sewing machine to sew the two short ends together. Turn the washcloth inside out to form a pocket.
Fill the pocket with rice, about two-thirds full. You don’t want it too full so the grains can move around and the heating pad will mold to the body. Now use your sewing machine to sew the remaining washcloth edge together.
I know you won’t believe me, but you’re done now. Doesn’t it look great?
I’ll confess…I’m keeping this gift for myself. Do you know how rare it is for me to keep a project for myself?? That’s how much I love this Microwavable Rice Heating Pad!
This awesome Microwavable Rice Heating Pad only cost me about $4 to make. I’m estimating since I already had the rice on hand in my pantry. I purchased the pretty colorful washcloth at my local Wal-Mart for only $1.97! I really hope you’ve enjoyed this year’s Frugal Gift Friday series. My goal was to inspire you to make some thoughtful but thrifty gifts this year, and I hope I’ve succeeded. It’s easy to get caught up in the commercialism of the holiday season, but please remember it’s not the gift that really matters. It’s the thought and effort put into a gift that makes it really special.

Sorry I lost you with the sewing! I made mine with a washcloth because I like the shape better, but lots of people make these with a sock instead. All you have to do is fill up the sock, then tie the end really tight with string. Maybe you could give that a try?
Shana Sutton says
ohh now that i can handle! lol thanks!!! i’ll try it and let ya know!

You can try using stitch witchery. Can be bought at Walmart and you can make a sem using just an iron.
