When Erica over at On Bliss Street asked me to join her in the Cent-Sational Salvage Challenge, I was immediately intrigued. I love a good upcycled project, and when I found out that Jess at Live Randomly Simple, Timisha at Toolbox Divas and Jason at East Coast Upcyclers were on board, I knew I was in! The rules of this challenge are pretty simple. All I had to do was take the monthly theme and head over to my local Habitat Restore and promise not to spend over $15 on my project. You can use materials you already have on hand to help you with your project, too. This month’s theme was Kitchen Utensils, and my project was made with a mere $1.59.
Here is what I used to make this project:
- 3 Butter Knives
- 1 Saucer plate
- Chalk paint and brush
- Hot glue/glue gun
I originally bought just a set of butter knives, thinking I would use them to make hooks to hang something. I like to be original, though, so I decided against that idea since I’ve seen so many people do that. I came up with the idea to use the knives as legs for an upcycled candleholder, so I went back to the Habitat Restore and bought a saucer so I could complete my plan.
I love it when my hubby helps me with my projects, especially when my projects require extra strength! He was more than happy to bend my set of knives for me.
I decided to paint the saucer with some chalk paint I already had in my craft stash because it looked pretty boring to start with and needed some color. A couple of coats later I was ready to assemble my upcycled candleholder and attach the legs.
I attached the knives to the saucer plate using a hot glue gun, arranging them flat in a triangle to form a tripod base for the candleholder. It was a perfect fit! I love it when that happens.
All that my upcycled candleholder needed now was a candle.
I love that my upcycled candleholder is the perfect size for a pillar candle like this one. What do you think?
If you have enough knives, you could easily make matching candleholders. Just bend the knives at different lengths to adjust the height if you want the heights varied. Unfortunately, I only have two knives left, so I’ll have to think of another project for them. Ideas, anyone?
I just love these decorative legs don’t you? I’m so glad I found such beautiful butter knives at the Habitat Restore! What a steal for only $1!!
So, how do you think I did on this month’s Cent-Sational Salvage Challenge? I hope you’ll stop by and visit the other bloggers participating to see what they’ve come up with this month, too. This challenge was so much fun, and I already know what I’m doing for next month’s challenge. I can’t wait to show it to you! Would you like a hint? It involves a switch plate. That’s all I can say for now, so you’ll have to stop by again next month to see my creation.

That’s so creative! I’ve seen some flatware used to make wind chimes, but you would need quite a few pieces.
Christie Selken says
I’ve seen wind chimes made from a teapot and flatware, so maybe I’ll hold on to my extra knives until I have enough to give it a try! 🙂
