Do you often find yourself at the end the day feeling as though you didn’t accomplish anything? This happens to many of us, and the problem usually lies in our inability to stay focused on our tasks. This could be for many reasons. Maybe you’re battling distractions, unprepared for the day, tired or simply don’t have a good game plan. Whatever the reason, the trick to overcoming is in learning how to stay focused so you will get more done each day. Follow these tips and you’ll be accomplishing more and hitting your goals in record time!
1. Create a Strong Schedule
First things first. You need a great schedule. It’s not enough to have a to-do list. You want to create a schedule that lays out your day. Some people do well with laying the day out hour-by-hour while others need to go as far as scheduling something for every 30 minutes of the day. Do what works best for you and remember to give yourself buffers in case a project runs longer than anticipated. The best way to stick to a strong schedule is by using a planner.
2. Limit Distractions
For some, this is simple. If you have kids at home, this can be harder. The key is to limit distractions as much as possible. For example, find a quiet work space that is work focused. Even if you can only set up a small space in your den for a home office, it can make a big difference. When you enter that space, your brain will kick into work mode.
3. Gather Everything You Need
Just like a recipe goes together more smoothly when you have everything gathered, so does your work day. Make sure you have everything you need before you settle in for the day. You don’t want to have to get up to get more water or to gather your research material. Make sure you have it all where you need it before you get started.
4. Close Your Email
The biggest time-killer is email. When you make your schedule, set times to check your email. Do not leave your email open all the time or you’ll be tempted to check it. The same goes for your phone. Check messages at scheduled times to avoid losing focus.
5. Work During Your Most Productive Time of Day
Some people work best first thing in the morning while others do better in the afternoon. Choose the hours that are your strong point and schedule your hardest projects for that time frame. This ensures that you get more done rather than trying to tackle those big projects when you aren’t at your best.
6. 50 Minutes On – 10 Minutes Off
A great tip is to work for 50 minutes and then take 10 minutes off. This gives you time to get up and take a short walk, grab a snack, or just get away from the computer for a few minutes. People who follow this tip find that they get a lot more done because they give themselves time to rest.
7. Eat
It may sound obvious, but many people skip meals hoping to get more done, but this plan usually backfires. It’s even harder to stay focused and work on your tasks when you’re feeling hungry or eating the wrong foods. You need to eat to fuel your brain. Schedule lunch and breaks into your schedule so that you take time to eat a real meal rather than snacking on junk food at your desk.
8. Get Ready for the Next Day
At the end of each day, take the time to get ready for the next day. Gather any supplies you’ll need, brainstorm papers you’re working on, etc. When everything is ready to go ahead of time when you sit down in the morning you’ll get so much more done. Don’t forget to also create your schedule for the next day.
9. Simplify Your Routine
The easiest way to get more done each day is by simplifying your daily routine. Since my word for this year is SIMPLIFY, I’ve been on a mission to find ways to make my life easier so I can get more done in less time. It’s amazing how much more you can accomplish once you’ve carved out extra time from your life. I’ve found ways to simplify my life so I have the extra time I need to get more done and you can do it, too!
One way I’ve simplified my life is by streamlining my morning routine. Since I eat the same meal for breakfast everyday, I prepare my breakfast ahead of time on Sunday afternoons. It’s easy to make yogurt parfaits and have them stored in the fridge, and even easier to grab one in the morning when I’m on the go.
Another way I’ve simplified my morning routine is by using Centrum Vitamints and Centrum MultiGummies. On busy mornings, I often forget to take my vitamins in the rush of my morning tasks. Not anymore thanks to these vitamins because they make it so easy! Whether I’m headed to my desk or out the door, I don’t even need water to chew these tasty vitamins.
Did I mention these vitamins are delicious? Yes, they taste like a yummy mint or gummy candy, and the new raspberry flavored Vitamints are my favorite! You can easily find Centrum Vitamints and Centrum MultiGummies at your local Walgreens, which is where I purchased mine from the vitamin aisle. You can feel good about your purchase, too, because Walgreens is making a donation to Vitamin Angels for every vitamin purchase. I love a win-win, don’t you?
If you have trouble staying focused at home or on the job, I hope you’ll try some of these tips. Chances are you’ll find that you get more done, which means you’ll have more time on your hands. Best of all, you’ll have less stress and be a much happier person! Tell me, what are some ways you’ve simplified your routine to accomplish more?
