Is it just me, or is everyone talking about decluttering your home these days? I turn on the TV and people are talking about it, I go to a store and see books written about it, and I won’t even get started about all I’ve seen on Pinterest about it. Yes, everyone is busy packing up unnecessary stuff and getting it out of their homes. While decluttering your home may seem like a craze to you, there really are some great benefits to it. In fact, I can think of 6 ways decluttering your home can improve your life. Do you think you’re ready to give it a try?
Before we get any further into this subject, I feel like I should confess something to you. I may be a little biased because I despise clutter. Seriously, I have always been a neat freak and I can’t stand to have a bunch of junk I don’t need sitting around my home. I actually enjoy trips to the thrift store and the sense of satisfaction I feel after I hand my unwanted items over to someone else. I really don’t accumulate a lot of stuff (other than craft supplies) because of my habit of getting rid of things I don’t need.
So although I’m biased about decluttering, I’m also an expert since I do it so regularly. And although I’m sure there are lots of benefits of decluttering your home, today I’m going to concentrate on just 6 of them. Let’s think of them as 6 reasons why you should grab a box and start clearing out the clutter in your home today. If you started decluttering your home today….
#6: YOU COULD HAVE BETTER TIME MANAGEMENT
I bet I may have lost some of you already. You’re probably thinking, “If I have to spend time getting rid of stuff in my home, how will I actually gain extra time and get more done?” Well, think about the last time you had to look for something and couldn’t find it. Maybe you were in a rush to leave the house and couldn’t find your keys because they were buried under a stack magazines and miscellaneous items on your coffee table. Or think about a day when you really needed to get some work done but had trouble focusing on your tasks because your desk was piled high with bills and books you really should have donated a really long time ago. Less clutter means you can get more things done in less time because you will know where things are at and you will have less distractions in your life.
#5: YOU COULD HAVE MORE ROOM IN YOUR HOME
Once you start getting rid of the stacks of books, piles of clothing, extra dishes, furniture pieces and small appliances that you really don’t need, you will be amazed at the extra room you will have in your home. A small room can look so much larger without a lot of junk filling up its space. You may even find room for that desk you thought wouldn’t fit in your bedroom!
#4: YOU COULD HAVE MORE MONEY
Think of all the money you could make on eBay or Craigslist if you got rid of the unnecessary stuff in your home. Books, furniture, knick knacks, exercise equipment, stuffed toys, the latest infomercial purchase. I won’t even judge you for having these things in your home as long as you make an effort to get rid of them and stop buying more!
Not only can you make money by selling unnecessary items, but once you get serious about keeping clutter out of your home your finances will change. You’ll stop coming home from the thrift store with a box full of items you don’t need. Say goodbye to impulse buys at the cash register because now you’ll know that you don’t need that junk in your house. These changes mean less spending and more money in your pocket. I’ve got you hooked on the thought of decluttering your home now, don’t I?
#3: YOU COULD HAVE LESS CLEANING TO DO
This one seals the deal for me. Less stuff equals less stuff to clean. That means less items to dust, less laundry to fold, less dishes to wash. Enough said.
#2: YOU COULD RUN YOUR HOUSEHOLD MORE EFFICIENTLY
You’ll understand this one once you start decluttering your bathroom cabinet and find 10 bottles of the same shampoo, or find 12 jars of pasta sauce in your kitchen pantry. When you have less clutter you’ll have a much better idea of what you have in your home and eliminate a lot of these extra purchases. No more trips to the store to buy items you already have buried in the back of your closet, either!
#1: YOU COULD FEEL BETTER AND LIFE A HAPPIER LIFE
Here it is…the number one reason you should declutter your home today. Happiness and contentment. That’s right! You will feel much more comfortable relaxing in a clean, organized home than sitting amidst the chaos of clutter. When I keep my home clear of messy clutter, I want to spend more and more time there. It’s just good to be home, and there’s no other place like it. I bet you will enjoy being at home, too, and someone may even have to pry you off the couch to get you out of the house on date night. I’m just speaking from experience here.
