By establishing these routines in your household, you’ll prevent the clutter from piling up again and become more productive and live a happier life while at home. Sound good? Then read on…
1. Buy One, Toss One
Do you have the habit of collecting things? Maybe it’s pocket books, shoes, books, or a million other things. Whatever it is, when you bring a new one home, you need to get rid of one. You don’t actually have to toss the old item. Donate the old items so that someone else can get use out of it. If you’re really wanting to banish clutter, get rid of two for every one you bring home.
2. The One Year Rule
Start in any room you want to clear out. If you have items that you haven’t use in over a year, get rid of them. The reason the one year rule works is that you have items you only use once a year, usually at the holidays. However, if you have several baking dishes that you haven’t used in over a year, donate them. When you get rid of these unused items, you have more room to store the items you do use and you cut down on clutter.
3. Wait Before You Buy
Before you bring something home, go home and think about it. More times than not, you’ll find that you don’t actually need that item. It can be so easy to get caught up in an impulse buy, but most of these purchases are ones that you end up regretting.
4. The Daily Pickup Habit
At the end of each day, go around your home and gather items that are in the wrong room and return them. It might be blankets the kids brought into the living room or paperwork that’s littering the dining room table. Instead of letting these items pile up for weeks at a time, do this each night to make the chore easy and to start a good habit.
5. Keep Inventory
A great way to avoid clutter is by keeping an inventory of items you have in your home so you don’t make the mistake of buying extra. Have you ever found 10 bags of cotton balls when cleaning out your bathroom cabinets or ten outdated boxes of crackers in your pantry? When you know what cleaning supplies, skincare products, pantry items, etc. you have in your home, you know what you do and don’t need and can avoid those unneeded extra purchases and clutter.
Your home doesn’t have to be overrun with clutter. With these simple tips, you can start lasting habits that will help you keep your home clutter-free. Tell me, what tip would you add to the list?
